Michael Shorter is a writer unable to write. He's literally treading water in a sea of misery since his wife died and he simply cannot find the way out. To make matters worse, he also has to navigate around the fact he is a hypersexual and fantasizes about virtually every woman he meets.

When a car crash outside his apartment makes him react unconsciously to go to the aid of the driver, Michael's got no way of knowing he's racing into an F.B.I. investigation involving South American crime cartels and the highest echelons of state government.

As the full weight of the situation becomes apparent, he also starts to imagine the seeds of a new story he might be able to begin. With a target on his back Michael swings between being a witness, victim and prime suspect and he's got little choice to become more and more involved to protect himself.

Somehow, some way, in this heaving mass of personal and professional anguish there might be an end to his suffering, providing he can stay alive long enough to get there.
